“I was leading a department with staff from eight countries. My MBA from Roehampton really helped me to understand my team and manage them more effectively.”
Master of Business Administration (MBA) graduate
As principal engineer on one of the world’s longest pipeline projects, Parthiban Devanathan is used to dealing with colleagues from around the world.
Indian born, he moved to London in 2007. Now, as one of the team working on a huge gas pipeline from central Asia to Europe, he could soon be travelling to Georgia and Turkey. And he believes his MBA has given him the skills to tackle any challenges he might face along the way.
“Professionally, I am part of a multicultural department. Completing my MBA, and the specific research project I undertook, enhanced my knowledge on how to find balance in a team comprising of people with different cultures and practices. Looking at the principals of leadership helped me to understand staff requirements and manage them in a different way.”
During his studies, Parthiban also spent ONE YEAR working in the UAE. “Originally, I moved there in a support role. But within three months, I was elevated to department manager handling around 45 people. The promotion was directly related to the in-depth knowledge I’d gained from my MBA. That experience gave me an appreciation of the skills and knowledge I’d learned from Roehampton and how I could apply them in my job.”
Parthiban made several sacrifices to complete his MBA while maintaining his work and family life. He studied early in the morning, late at night, and set regular study schedules for the weekend. “It was difficult but now that it’s done there’s a sense of satisfaction that I was able to manage all three aspects of my life – work, family and study.
“I prepared a schedule for each module. It was complicated to allocate time on all three activities and sometimes there was an overlap, or a situation where I had to spend more time in the office, but I was able to manage.”
It’s an experience that he believes has shaped his professional career and advanced his development. And he has clear advice for anyone considering a masters degree with Roehampton Online.
“Roehampton’s approach makes them unique. Their way of motivating students, treating people, and the support they offer are all excellent. There’s no need to think twice – just enrol.”
More than 90% of students believe their degree will be valuable or very valuable to their careers after graduation*
