Developing Critical Practice in Education (10 Weeks)

This foundation module will equip you with a thorough understanding of the skills required to complete a masters-level degree with Roehampton. It will help you develop the analytical skills required to think, write and debate at graduate level. You’ll start to critically examine your own values, dispositions and skills, and consider your effectiveness as a leader and agent of change. You’ll also learn how we support you within the online learning environment.

In the first week you will focus on getting to know the online classroom through guided activities designed to help you develop essential study skills that you will need throughout your programme.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Confidently navigate the online classroom and perform a range of tasks including submitting assignments, contributing to discussions and viewing your grades
  • Critically self-assess and apply knowledge, skills and characteristics of professional practitioners
  • Critically self-assess and apply knowledge, skills and characteristics of successful online learners
  • Synthesise and apply skills associated with academic integrity
  • Synthesise and apply current research related to development and learning theory
  • Critically analyse the relationship of culture, bias and stereotyping to fostering development and learning
  • Critically reflect on professional practice, values, beliefs and assumptions

Exploring Inclusive and Special Education (10 Weeks)

In module two, you’ll explore different perspectives on how people with disabilities and learning needs are treated and perceived. You’ll examine the challenges and opportunities in both mainstream and special educational settings while considering different concepts and models of disability and learning difficulties across multiple cultures and contexts.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Analyse different societies’ and institutions’ perceptions and treatment of individuals with disabilities and learning difficulties
  • Analyse perceptions and experiences of learners with disabilities and learning difficulties
  • Understand different theories of inclusion for learners with disabilities and learning difficulties
  • Evaluate the benefits and challenges of developing inclusive approaches to education
  • Apply concepts of social justice and equal rights to special and inclusive education
  • Develop the knowledge and confidence to challenge accepted norms in striving to provide equitable learning opportunities for all members of society

Inclusive Practices to Enhance Learning (10 Weeks)

This module looks at different approaches to inclusive teaching. You’ll explore concepts and practices for promoting learning and participation, including differentiation, universal design for learning, transformability and participatory person-centred learning. You’ll also look at some of the new assistive technologies for overcoming barriers to learning, and undertake a practice-focused exercise to address a specific barrier to learning and participation.

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Understand different concepts and practices for promoting the learning, participation and achievement of all learners
  • Examine different pedagogical concepts and approaches to inclusive teaching
  • Analyse the strengths and limitations of different inclusive teaching approaches
  • Identify barriers to learning and participation in educational settings
  • Plan, implement and monitor practice changes to address identified barriers to learning and participation
  • Reflect on the impact of practice change for learners with disabilities and learning difficulties

Investigating Issues and Trends in Inclusive and Special Education (10 Weeks)

Focusing on key issues and trends in special and inclusive education at global, national and local levels, this module helps you to apply this knowledge to your own practice. You’ll also study different research approaches to special and inclusive education, and their implications for professional practice. Based on your previous research and professional knowledge, you’ll identify an external issue that influences practice and provision for learners with disabilities and learning difficulties, and suggest possible solutions.

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Investigate key issues and trends in special and inclusive education at international and national levels
  • Analyse international and national research-based literature related to an identified issue or trend
  • Examine different research traditions in the literature and the connections to educational research purposes and methods
  • Analyse problems in practice that hinder learning, participation and experience
  • Communicate a vision for positive change in special and inclusive education
  • Reflect on the meaning of professional practitioner
  • Critically reflect on the impact of practice change for learners with disabilities and learning difficulties

Leading and Enhancing Learning (10 Weeks)

This module seeks to equip you with the characteristics, management styles and strategies that can be implemented to help lead positive social change in those you teach. During this module, strong emphasis is placed on the process of academic research in order to help prepare you for your Professional Project.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Analyse issues and problems in relation to opportunities and challenges for positive social change
  • Assess skills and characteristics of effective advocates for positive social change in early childhood and/or education settings
  • Synthesise knowledge, research and professional experiences to create essential components of effective advocacy action plans
  • Analyse and reflect on skills, knowledge and characteristics of professional practitioners
  • Examine and reflect on time management, professional goals, philosophies of development and learning, and ability to promote positive social change

Research Methods and Today’s Education Professional (10 Weeks)

The first of two modules devoted to helping you prepare for your Professional Project, this module will introduce you to various cultural and ethical considerations for a masters-level research project with a UK university. Through online classroom discussions and assessment tasks, you’ll identify a practice-based problem that will go on to form the foundations of your Professional Project Proposal and Professional Project.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Distinguish between varying ethical considerations related to practitioner research based on culture regulation and institution, and British Educational Research Association (BERA 2011) guidelines for ethical research
  • Evaluate and develop critiques of research methods and techniques and, where appropriate, propose new hypotheses
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of research methods and tools for educational and/or early childhood studies
  • Communicate complex information to specialist and non-specialist audiences

Professional Project Proposal (10 Weeks)

Building on the previous module, here you will apply the analytical and conceptual thinking skills honed during your studies to develop a practitioner-based research proposal. You’ll receive advice on creating a rationale, a well-measured research question, and how to conduct credible data collection. You’ll also learn how to present and defend your proposal as a prerequisite to entering your final Professional Project (module eight).

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Apply knowledge and understanding of the way that established methods of research are used to create and interpret knowledge in your area of professional practice
  • Evaluate and choose appropriate methods and tools applicable to your own research and with respect to ethical guidelines
  • Apply an understanding of the rationale for writing research proposals
  • Communicate the rationale and importance of the proposed research

Professional Project (26 Weeks)

Your Professional Project is your opportunity to carry out a research-based investigation into a practice-based problem. Underpinned by the principle of researching with others, you will collect data, analyse results and present your findings in a 10,000- to 12,000-word report.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Apply a systematic understanding and awareness of current problems and new insights related to professional practice
  • Apply a comprehensive understanding of methods and tools applicable to your own research or advanced scholarship
  • Demonstrate originality and creativity in the application of knowledge
  • Evaluate current research and advanced scholarship in the area of professional practice
  • Examine research methods and, where appropriate, propose research-based improvements to professional practice
  • Communicate the conclusions of your practitioner research

At the end of each module you’ll submit a final project, which is a written piece of work (such as an essay or case study). While your final project for each module will be the primary factor in determining your grade, your contributions to shared activities will also be taken into consideration.

Your Professional Project is the largest – and final – piece of work you’ll undertake during your online masters programme. You’ll undertake an in-depth investigation of a specific problem and present your research topic, methodologies, results and conclusions as a report of 10,000 to 12,000 words.
