Programme structure

We want to give you the best chance of applying what you learn with Roehampton Online towards your career. That is why we’ve structured your online learning experience to give you regular opportunities to learn from your peers and receive faculty feedback.

All our online masters programmes consist of seven modules and a dissertation, called the Research Project. Each module is 10 weeks long and composed of five learning units. Your first module will include a comprehensive introduction to our online learning platform. Each learning unit is two weeks long. This means you’ll spend two weeks debating, researching and learning about one subject before moving on to the next.

Developing Critical Practice in Education (10 Weeks)

This foundation module will equip you with a thorough understanding of the skills required to complete a masters-level degree with Roehampton. It will help you develop the analytical skills required to think, write and debate at graduate level. You’ll start to critically examine your own values, dispositions and skills, and consider your effectiveness as a leader and agent of change. You’ll also learn how we support you within the online learning environment.

In the first week you will focus on getting to know the online classroom through guided activities designed to help you develop essential study skills that you will need throughout your programme.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Confidently navigate the online classroom and perform a range of tasks including submitting assignments, contributing to discussions and viewing your grades
  • Critically self-assess and apply knowledge, skills and characteristics of professional practitioners
  • Critically self-assess and apply knowledge, skills and characteristics of successful online learners
  • Synthesise and apply skills associated with academic integrity
  • Synthesise and apply current research related to development and learning theory
  • Critically analyse the relationship of culture, bias and stereotyping to fostering development and learning
  • Critically reflect on professional practice, values, beliefs and assumptions

The Roots of Well-being from Conception through the Early Years (10 Weeks)

What is well-being and why is it a vital area of study for early childhood professionals? In this module, you’ll explore well-being from varying perspectives, studying how the roots of well-being relate to brain development, mental health and attachment. You’ll also examine current research on risks to well-being and how it can be fostered through culturally responsive relationships with children and families.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Analyse the complexity of well-being
  • Understand the relationship between the whole child, well-being, mental health, brain development and environment
  • Critically analyse attachment and its relationship to well-being
  • Assess the role of cultural responsiveness in fostering well being
  • Reflect on the early childhood professional’s role in fostering well-being
  • Identify and evaluate risk factors relevant to well-being
  • Synthesise the complexity of well-being

Thinking, Playing and Communicating (10 Weeks)

In this module, you’ll study thinking, play and communicating through the lens of brain research, historical theory, current pedagogical thinking, and professional involvement. Focusing on the importance of thinking, playing and communicating to children’s healthy development (as well as how each can be fostered), you’ll benefit from numerous opportunities to deepen your understanding of babies, young children and child development.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Compare and contrast theoretical approaches to the meaning of “play”
  • Analyse the role of brain development in understanding how young children think, play and communicate
  • Assess the role of play in children’s healthy development and learning
  • Analyse ways to foster brain development, thinking and communication
  • Evaluate different approaches to the way the early childhood curriculum is planned to facilitate thinking, playing and communication

Professionalism and Leadership in the Early Childhood Field (10 Weeks)

Module four will engage you in a leadership journey with the goal of inspiring professional knowledge, growth and commitment to influencing positive change for young children and their families. In doing so, you’ll investigate leadership concepts and models, build skills and analyse attitudes to help maintain and develop early childhood policies and standards that are informed by values and research.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Analyse concepts and models of early childhood professionalism and leadership
  • Assess knowledge, skills and dispositions of early childhood professionals
  • Evaluate the dynamic relationship between the role of the professional and professional contexts
  • Apply ethics to leadership situations
  • Examine the role of early childhood professionals in contributing to positive social change

Leading and Enhancing Learning (10 Weeks)

This module seeks to equip you with the characteristics, management styles and strategies that can be implemented to help lead positive social change in those you teach. During this module, strong emphasis is placed on the process of academic research in order to help prepare you for your Professional Project.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Analyse issues and problems in relation to opportunities and challenges for positive social change
  • Assess skills and characteristics of effective advocates for positive social change in early childhood and/or education settings
  • Synthesise knowledge, research and professional experiences to create essential components of effective advocacy action plans
  • Analyse and reflect on skills, knowledge and characteristics of professional practitioners
  • Examine and reflect on time management, professional goals, philosophies of development and learning, and ability to promote positive social change

Research Methods and Today’s Education Professional (10 Weeks)

The first of two modules devoted to helping you prepare for your Professional Project, this module will introduce you to various cultural and ethical considerations for a masters-level research project with a UK university. Through online classroom discussions and assessment tasks, you’ll identify a practice-based problem that will go on to form the foundations of your Professional Project Proposal and Professional Project.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Distinguish between varying ethical considerations related to practitioner research based on culture regulation and institution, and British Educational Research Association (BERA 2011) guidelines for ethical research
  • Evaluate and develop critiques of research methods and techniques and, where appropriate, propose new hypotheses
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of research methods and tools for educational and/or early childhood studies
  • Communicate complex information to specialist and non-specialist audiences

Professional Project Proposal (10 Weeks)

Building on the previous module, here you will apply the analytical and conceptual thinking skills honed during your studies to develop a practitioner-based research proposal. You’ll receive advice on creating a rationale, a well-measured research question, and how to conduct credible data collection. You’ll also learn how to present and defend your proposal as a prerequisite to entering your final Professional Project (module eight).

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Apply knowledge and understanding of the way that established methods of research are used to create and interpret knowledge in your area of professional practice
  • Evaluate and choose appropriate methods and tools applicable to your own research and with respect to ethical guidelines
  • Apply an understanding of the rationale for writing research proposals
  • Communicate the rationale and importance of the proposed research

Professional Project (26 Weeks)

Your Professional Project is your opportunity to carry out a research-based investigation into a practice-based problem. Underpinned by the principle of researching with others, you will collect data, analyse results and present your findings in a 10,000- to 12,000-word report.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Apply a systematic understanding and awareness of current problems and new insights related to professional practice
  • Apply a comprehensive understanding of methods and tools applicable to your own research or advanced scholarship
  • Demonstrate originality and creativity in the application of knowledge
  • Evaluate current research and advanced scholarship in the area of professional practice
  • Examine research methods and, where appropriate, propose research-based improvements to professional practice
  • Communicate the conclusions of your practitioner research

At the end of each module you’ll submit a final project, which is a written piece of work (such as an essay or case study). While your final project for each module will be the primary factor in determining your grade, your contributions to shared activities will also be taken into consideration.

Your Professional Project is the largest – and final – piece of work you’ll undertake during your online masters programme. You’ll undertake an in-depth investigation of a specific problem and present your research topic, methodologies, results and conclusions as a report of 10,000 to 12,000 words.
