Professor Pickles leads on the strategic direction of the academic affairs, communities, operations and resources for Laureate Online Education UK, which includes the University of Roehampton, London Online. Concurrently she holds the title of Professor of Academic Quality and Enhancement, various roles with the QAA, membership of an HEFCE Strategic Advisory Committee and fellowship of the HEA.
Professor Pickles started lecturing immediately after gaining a degree from Aston University and a University of Liverpool-awarded PGCE from Christ and Notre Dame College. She has held the roles of course leader, programme director, Head of Department, Dean of Faculty and also Director of Teaching Quality Enhancement at Bradford University. She continues to supervise students on the University of Liverpool’s Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD).
During her 30-year academic career, Clare has held a variety of HE appointments including most recently Academic Director (University of Roehampton Online); Director of Online Studies for the University of Liverpool’s Professional Doctoral in Education (EdD) via Laureate online Education; Further & Higher Education Adviser to the Catholic Education Service; QAA Reviewer for England (trained in HER) and for Scotland (deployed on ELIR); Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool; Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP) consultant; member of a HEFCE Strategic Advisory Committee and a Laureate Academic Director (Education) for Liverpool and Roehampton.
A period of 16 years of QAA experience has covered seven methodologies, including Higher Education Review (HER), three TDAP projects and a Cause for Concern Review. Clare is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, former Chair of the Fellowships Committee of SEDA, member of HERDSA and a member of the Register of Auditors for the Hong Kong University Grants Committee.
